Rally for Sanity

Via TPM:

My girlfriend and I cashed in our miles so we could fly in for the rally. As we boarded our flight from Minneapolis into Reagan, it was largely an older crowd, and we figured we must be the only ones on the flight headed for the rally.

Then, as we were getting settled on the plane, we started hearing whispers from seats behind us, “Are you going to the rally? Are you?” We found out our neighbor was, a gentleman who was upset he hadn’t been to Woodstock, and wanted to make up for lost time.

As people began to realize the plane was filled with nothing but rally goers, no joke, we all cheered, spontaneously. The flight had much more energy than usual - loads of people chatting about Jon Stewart, politics, etc. It seemed most people on the flight were baby boomers. After all, who else is going to have the time and money to fly themselves in from Minnesota?

When we landed, a woman shouted, “Sanity has just landed in DC!” and we all burst out in cheers and applause.

If I didn’t have completely awesome weekend plans I’d be on a plane too.

The 11-inch MacBook Air

Tiny. Solid. I picked the wrong week to post a snippet of the Daily Show on my site. Hey Daily Show. H.264. Look it up.

This is why Snow Leopard has a smaller footprint. This is why iTunes doesn’t have a title bar anymore.

Seriously. Tiny. I need to try rebooting it before I leave. What else? I wonder if it has Photoshop on it. Nope. But it’s got Aperture. Wow. Snappy. Not snappy enough. But still. SSDs are nice.

Heh. Flash Player disk image on the desktop. But they didn’t install it? Odd.

I want one. But of course it wouldn’t work for me. What do you do? AirDisk I guess. Is that still a thing? Yup. “AirPort Disk” they call it.

Then what? Do these things still burn your lap? A 2GB AirPort Disk over 802.11N. Is that fast enough? Hm. Only one thing’s for sure.

I want one.

Don’t Buy an iPad, Continued

Okay, it seems like a lot of people didn’t heed my advice, and bought an iPad. If you’re having buyer’s remorse, let me know. I’d be happy to do you a favor and take it off your hands. I’d be willing to go as high as $50. I know, I’m a saint.

As for the rest of you, well done. But don’t let your guard down. It’s almost the Winter shopping season and Apple’s up to its old tricks of releasing big software updates for free and making their products easier to buy. Seriously, I heard the iPad is in Best Buy and Target and even Verizon stores soon.

Do not be fooled! I mean, yes, it has the fastest adoption rate of any consumer electronics device in history. But I hear there are smaller tablets coming out soon. Because the fundamental flaw with the iPad is its big beautiful screen. And the competitors aren’t burdened with iOS. Huuuge advantage there.

You’re in the home stretch. Just don’t give in. If you can just— whoop, email notification, brb —where was I? Right, hold out. That “way better thing” is just around the corner.

Posted from my iPad.

Faster User Switching

Sounds like we’re going to hear about Mac OS X 10.7 Lion next Wednesday. So here’s my #1, A++, would-pay-upgrade-fee-for feature request:

Faster User Switching

My lovely wife and I share an iMac at home. We each have an account on it. Works great. Fast User Switching is turned on so we don’t have to sign out to switch accounts. But every time we switch, we have to enter each other’s password.

Every. Time.

EVERY. TIIIIIME.

So all I want is a way to tell the Accounts panel in System Preferences that I can switch to her account and she can switch to mine. No password required.

Massimo Vignelli’s Desk

It’s haunting me now. What does Massimo Vignelli do about his MacBook’s power cord? This scene from “Helvetica” is no help.

Here’s what I’d want:

Desk

For all I know, this is something that Vignelli would despise. But surely it’s better than running the wire clear to the edge. Right?
