“Motorola is reportedly set to launch the G5 processor (a.ka., PowerPC 8500) along with a new chipset (with support for 16MB of DDR memory) is set to go into volume production “real soon” at speeds of up to 1.6GHz (800MHz, 1GHz, 1.2GHz, 1.4GHz and 1.6GHz, according to The Register. The G5 has an increased pipeline (from the 7450’s seven stages to ten), is capable of exceeding 2GHz, uses silicon-on-insulator technology for lower watt consuption (26W at 1.4GHz), and supports both 64-/32-bit chip architectures as well as multi-processor configurations, according to the report.” (Via MacNN)
