Wednesday night, for the first time in who-knows-how-long, I stepped onto the scale at the gym, slid the heavy weight over to 220, and it dropped. Which means that I’ve lost somewhere between 20 to 25 pounds in the past eight months. And that might not be very fast or very much, but if you’ve never made a concerted effort to lose weight before, it’s kind of amazing.

Finish Line

My incredible system for losing the weight has been a combination of… wait for it… diet and exercise. The diet side is mostly about avoiding all soda, hardly any fast food, and a lot more steamed vegetables. The exercise side is mostly about a concerted effort to start running, for the first time in my life.

A few weeks ago I ran (or rather, mostly ran) in my first race. A few months before that, shortly after tweeting about how I’d reached a point where I was able to “run” (run/walk) four miles at a stretch, my friend Nick suggested I run a 5k. I thought that would be a good thing to do so I tried to find one but never really got serious about it.

Then my brother (who’s training for the San Francisco Marathon) suggested we run the Marin 5k on Memorial Day. But by that point, I was getting cocky and 5k seemed a little too easy. So I suggested the 10k. We invited the rest of our family and a bunch of us met up for the race. (Thanks again guys!)

I came in 507th and dead last in my age group but I achieved my only goal which was to cross the finish line before they took it down. (They take it down only a little over an hour after the race begins.) We got some very nice shirts for finishing and I avoided passing out or throwing up so on the whole I consider it a victory. :)

Onward to 200!
